Hugo Barra Joins Facebook as VP of virtual reality
Less than a week after announcing his departure from Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi after three-and-a-half years, Hugo Barra will be joining Facebook as the VP of Virtual reality (VPVR). The Brazilian will be in charge of the company’s VR efforts including the Oculus team.
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, made the announcement with an image of their meeting fittingly in Virtual Reality (VR).
“Hugo shares my belief that virtual and augmented reality will be the next major computing platform. They’ll enable us to experience completely new things and be more creative than ever before. Hugo is going to help build that future, and I’m looking forward to having him on our team,” he wrote.
At Xiaomi, Hugo Barra was in charge of international expansion. He was hugely involved in the launch of Xiaomi smartphones and tablets in various markets outside China. Some of the markets includes – India, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, the Philippines, and South Africa.
Prior to his role at Xiaomi, Hugo Barra spent about six years at Google (from 2008 – 2013) and served in a number of roles such as VP of Android Product Management. He was involved in both hardware and software products such as Android Jelly Bean and KitKat OS, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.
