$65 LTE enabled Xiaomi Redmi Series smartphone certified on TENAA

Around November last year, word got out that Xiaomi is working on a $65 LTE enable handset and it would feature a Leadcore chipset. This unnamed Xiaomi device is expected to be a cheaper variant of the recently announced Xiaomi Redmi 2 (not to be confused with Xiaomi Redmi Note 2).

The $65 LTE enabled smartphone from Xiaomi has been certified on TENAA in China which points towards a nearer launch date. It could potentially carry the Redmi Series name and be marketed as a cheaper alternative to the Redmi 2.

Last year Xiaomi reportedly signed a deal with Leadcore worth around $16.8 million to gain access to the company’s intellectual property rights and also its chipset. The chipset used on this model is the
Leadcore LC1860C chipset which is manufactured using a 28nm process on a quad-core cortex-A7 architecture. The Leadcore LC1860C which replaces the 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 SoC (64-bit) on the original Redmi 2; uses Quad Cortex A7 cores at 1.6GHz with dual-core Mali-T628 GPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB space of expandable storage.

Other key specs includes – a 4.7-inch 720p HD display, 8MP main camera capable of 1080p recording, 2MP front camera and Android 4.4.4 Kitkat OS. It weighs 134 grams and measures 9.2mm in thickness and would support TD-LTE/ LTE-FDD/ TF-SCDMA /WCDMA/ GSM/ EDGE networks.

Obviously the budget processor allows Xiaomi to price this model ($65 or CNY 400) lower than the Redmi 2 (CNY 700) which uses the 64-bit Snapdragon 410 Soc. You won’t find many sub $70 smartphones around supporting LTE; the company is expected to announce more details soon.
