9.7-inch Firefox OS MIPS-based reference tablet released, costs $100

For those who are tired of using the usual Android and Windows OS found on most cheap tablets around. There is an alternative coming in form of an affordable a MIPS-Based reference tablet from Chinese Company, Ingenic  and was announced by Alexandru Voica of Imagination Technologies Limited. It runs on an experimental version of Firefox OS or Android 4.4 Kitkat OS.

The specs of the tablet reflects it is pretty low-end, the 9.7-inch Firefox OS MIPS-based reference tablet features a 9.7-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core, MIPS32-based Ingenic JZ4780 processor with PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Micro USB, Mini HDMI port, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and headphone socket.

The tablet uses two physical buttons (one to sleep/wake the slate and the other to back proceeding); the volume rockers are along the edge alongside the DC Power Input and the stereo speakers sit at the bottom. The main interest here has to be the Firefox OS running on the tablet; developers are given access to the Firefox Marketplace so that they can easily create, test and publish apps based on cross-platform HTML5. There has been talks of Firefox OS tablets over the years but so far we haven’t seen more than concept and reference ones for now. Hopefully, there would be commercially available tablets running the OS soon.
