Rugged Cat S40 phone with Android 5.1 and $399 price tag launched

If you are in the market for a rugged smartphone and recent offerings in the market like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active doesn’t impress you. Caterpillar is adding a pricey midrange rugged smartphone – the Cat S40 into the mix; the device will launch in around 60 countries on August 1 for a price tag high as £399/$610 corrected to be $399.

Talking about the ruggedness, the Cat S40 comes with Military Standard 810G grade certification which makes it a choice for very harsh weather and environmental conditions. It is IP68 Certified for Dustproof and Waterproof. Asides being able to withstand around 60 minutes when dropped in 1metre of water, it also withstands falls from heights of 1.8 metres/6 feet. 

Moving to the hardware specs, the Caterpillar Cat S40 features 4.7-inch (960 x 540 pixels) display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection; the display can be operated on with gloves and wet hands just like most rugged phones. Under the hood, it is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor clocked at 1.1GHz paired with 1GB of RAM.

A 8MP camera adorns the back of the device, the front camera is a 2MP snapper and there is 16GB space of internal storage which is expandable by a microSD card slot. The Cat S40 runs Android 5.1 Lollipop OS, supports 4G LTE, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and NFC technology and is backed by a non-removable 3000mAh battery.
