Snapchat Inc., the company behind the popular social media app, Snapchat, has unveiled a new corporate name – Snap Inc. and launched its second product called Spectacles. The name change points to the company’s growing product portfolio and the change in focus from a one-product only venture.
Available in three colour options – Black, Coral and Teal, Spectacles (or Specs, for short) is the first ever hardware product by Snap Inc. and will arrive starting this fall in limited quantities for a price tag of US$ 129.99. The product is a pair of Sunglasses sporting a front facing video camera with a 115-degree lens.
Specs connect to the paired smartphone (Android or iOS) via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and snaps – up to 30 seconds at a time, recorded are save directly on the Snapchat app (Memories section) in a new circular video format – making it easy to with friends, family and other followers.
There is a light indicator which lets the user and those around know when the glasses start recording; and snaps recorded can be viewed standalone without connecting a smartphone.
On a single charge, Spectacles is capable of taking up to a day worth of snaps and the dedicated charging case which comes along with it, guarantees up to a week worth of battery juice. Another option for charging is the use of a regular cable to charge either the glasses or the case.
