Chinese device maker, Vivo showcased its latest Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2017. This new solution, which achieves under-display fingerprint scanning and heavily tipped to make the front home button obsolete, is developed in collaboration with US chip maker – Qualcomm and based on the latter’s ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensors (Display, Glass and Metal).
Vivo released a couple of pictures showing off the feature and people testing available units of the modified Vivo Xplay 6 from their booth at the MWC Shanghai 2017. The Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution is capable of scanning fingerprints under a 1.2 mmVivo thick OLED display with an embedded ultrasonic sensor.
When compared to existing traditional capacitive and optical fingerprint recognition technologies around; it has the advantage of being waterproof and also feature an anti-ambient light i.e users will be able to unlock their devices even with wet hands.
Since no standalone button or region is required, Vivo’s Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution will promote innovative designs in smartphone apperance such as integrated unibody, true full-screen display and mechanical waterproofing design. It can also be further expanded to enhance user experiences in the aspects of gesture recognition, security verification and other fields.
