Commenting on the launch, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, said;

“As we look to the future of smartphones, we’re at the threshold of an exciting new era. Mobile AI = On-Device AI + Cloud AI. Huawei is committed to turning smart devices into intelligent devices by building end-to-end capabilities that support coordinated development of chips, devices, and the cloud. The ultimate goal is to provide a significantly better user experience. The Kirin 970 is the first in a series of new advances that will bring powerful AI features to our devices and take them beyond the competition.”

Manufactured using a 10nm advanced TSMC process; the Huawei Kirin 970 SoC combines high density, high energy efficiency and a high processing speed. It is powered by an octa-core CPU (four ARM Cortex A73 Cores clocked up to 2.4GHz + four ARM Cortex A53 Cores clocked up to 1.8 GHz) like the Kirin 960 SoC but has a new generation 12-Core GPU (ARM Mali-G72MP12 GPU).

The chipset’s heterogeneous computing architecture allows it deliver up to 25 times the performance and up to 50 times greater efficiency. It also has support for LTE Category 18 (up to 1.2 Gbps download speeds). The Kirin 970 SoC has been confirmed to power the Huawei Mate 10 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro.
