Recap: Qualcomm Announces New Snapdragon 845 Mobile VR Reference Design To Power Next-Gen VR Experiences

Ahead of the just recently concluded MWC 2018, Qualcomm has unveiled its new virtual reality (VR) reference platform ‎- the Snapdragon 845 Mobile VR platform. The new platform is expected to build on the success of the Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform which powered various VR devices at the CES 2018.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Mobile VR Platform is expected to ‎power the next wave of smartphones and standalone virtual reality (VR) headsets, thereby creating the avenue for customers and developers to create the immersive applications and experiences of the future.

As expected, the reference platform is ‎based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, which has been engineered to deliver unique experiences that blur the lines between the physical and virtual worlds. The Adreno 630 visual processing subsystem on-board offers 30-percent better power efficiency, 30-percent faster graphics and more than twice as much display throughput compared to the Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform.

Qualcomm also touts the new Extended Reality (XR) features such as Adreno Foveation, which combines graphics rendering with eye tracking to understand where the user is looking, and Roomscale, which is the ability to track both moving and still body as well as location within a room without cables or separate room sensors.
