Mara Group Announce African-Made Smartphone Project

African technology company, Mara Group has announced plans to start the full- scale production of high-quality and affordable African-Made smartphones. The Mara Phone project, as it is known, is in-line with the African Development Bank‎’s (AFDB) High 5 Priority to support industrialization on the continent.

Mara Phone will be manufactured in plants across Africa starting with South Africa and Rwanda. ‎The initial target market for these Mara Phones would be first-time African users and they will eventually be exported out for sale in foreign markets including Europe.

Commenting on the announcement at the Africa Investment Forum (AIF), Ashish Thakkar, founder of Mara Corporation said;

“China has Huawei, Xiaomi; the U.S has iPhone and finally Africa has MaraPhone. This project will show the potential and ability that Africa can produce high quality and affordable smartphones in Africa, by Africans, for Africans and for the rest of the world. We are extremely grateful for the African Development Banks push in this sector which greatly encouraged our progress.”

Mara Group is expected to unveil the Mara X and Mara Z. Both models are made in partnership with Google, which will see the former launched as part of Google’s Android One program while the latter is based on Android Oreo (Go Edition).
