Xiaomi Unveil Mi Air Charge Technology for Remote Charging

Xiaomi has unveiled a new form of charging experience for electronic devices called the Mi Air Charge. The self-developed remote charging tech lets devices within range charge remotely (through thin air) instead of the familiar wired or wireless charging solutions available. Xiaomi expects the technology to be adopted in smartphones, smart watches, bracelets and other smart products.

Based on the blog post released by the company, the Xiaomi Mi Air Charge relies on space positioning and energy transmission. The charging pile is equipped five phase interference antennas to detect the location of the device and phase control array, composed of 144 antennas, to direct mm-wide waves through beamforming. It provides 5W remote charging to single and multiple devices within a radius of ‘several meters’ and performance is not affected by the presence of physical obstacles.

To adopt usage, the phones must be equipped with a miniaturized antenna array, which is made up of a built-in “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array”. The former broadcasts the device’s position, while the latter, composed of 14 antennas, convert mm-wave signal discharged from the charging pile into electric energy to charge the devices. There is no word on a timeline for availability in China and globally.
