Rakuten Mobile, Japan’s fourth mobile carrier and a subsidiary of Japanese electronics e-retail platform, Rakuten, has announced its latest 5G smartphone – Rakuten BIG S. The device, which is the cheaper follow-up to last year’s BIG (5G), is already on sale on the Rakuten Mobile website and available in select stores by mid-May for JPY 2,214 (24 installments) or one-time fee of JPY 50,980 (~USD 473/ EUR 391).

The Rakuten BIG S is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G octa-core 5G mobile platform and supports both sub-6 and mmwave 5G network bands as well as 4×4 MIMO in supported areas. It comes SIM-lock free and can be used with an eSIM. The device is fitted with a 6.4-inch FHD+ OLED display, in-display fingerprint sensor, 16MP (f/) selfie camera in the dewdrop notch and rear quad AI camera setup (48MP wide-angle + 8MP ultra-wide-angle + 8MP telephoto + 2MP depth).
The rest of the specs include 6GB RAM + 128GB storage, USB Type-C, face unlock, IPX7/IP6X (waterproof and dustproof rating), Bluetooth 5.0, and 3,900mAh battery with no support for wireless charging. The BIG S also comes pre-loaded with Android 10 OS and Rakuten Browser (beta). It is on sale in Black, Crimson Red and White colours.
