Sharp Aquos R6 Is World’s First Smartphone With 1-inch Sensor

Sharp has announced the launch of its latest flagship smartphone from its Aquos R series – the Sharp Aquos R6 exclusively for the Japanese market. The Aquos R6 currently holds the record for the world’s first smartphone with 1-inch sensor. While the press release did not reveal the maker of the sensor, it is currently ahead of Samsung (1/1.12 sensor) and Sony (1-inch in development) in this regard.

Sharp partnered with Leica to co-engineer the 20MP primary camera with 1-inch sensor on the Aquos R6. The camera has an ultra-wide f/1.9 7-element ‘Summicron’ lens with EIS, 19mm focal length, ToF sensor and single flashlight. The camera can shoot outstanding images, even in low-light conditions, however, there is no word on the video capabilities except implied mention of 8K video recording or playback.

The smartphone has packs a 6.6-inch (1260 x 2730 pixels) WUXGA+ Pro IGZO OLED display with a dynamic refresh rate (from 1Hz to 240Hz) and 2000nits peak brightness. The display also houses the Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Max ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and the centre-placed punch-hole notch holds the 12.6MP (f/2.3) selfie camera. There is also a side-button dedicated to Google Assistant.

Under the hood, it comes pre-loaded with Android 11 OS and relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5nm mobile platform paired with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB (UFS 3.1) storage, which is expandable up to 1TB via microSD. The rest of the specs include Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, IPX5/IPX8/IP6X rating (waterproof and dustproof), NFC, 3.5mm audio jack and 5,000mAh battery.

The Sharp Aquos R6 is currently exclusive to Japan and would be available by mid-June from docomo and SoftBank. Black and White are the available colour choices.
