Kyocera to showcase solar-charged smartphone prototype at the MWC 2015

Kyocera is set to showcase a solar-charged smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress Event which starts on March 1st. The prototype smartphone is based on the Kyocera TORQUE – the TORQUE KC-701 which is super rugged.

The Kyocera Solar-charged smartphone prototype uses a Wysips Crystal technology, which allows the handset to charge itself from sunlight (or other light sources). The Wysips Crystal could be placed beneath or above the touchscreen panel on the display.

The Wysips Crystal Panel is developed by French Company, SunPartners Technology; it combines both optical and photovoltaic technologies into one slim layer to allow the smartphone charge itself on Sunlight.

While new companies are slowly embracing new technologies in terms of charging devices; Solar Charging on smartphones would definitely be a hug step forward in the mobile battery segment.

If this technology ever becomes commercially viable, we should expect major manufacturers to embrace this feature for their premium devices and those OEMS in China would definitely take advantage too. Solar Charging alongside Wireless Charging would be something interesting to think about.
