What is all the fuss about Reversible USB Type-C?

If you are an avid reader you would have observed that both Apple’s New 12-inch Mackbook and Google’s new Chromebook Pixel (2015) both came with USB Type-C ports – this only points to the fact that the connector is now readily available for mass production.

The new Type-C USB offers up to 100 watts at 20 volts; this certainly marks the death of AC chargers for Laptops and allows fast charging of compatible smartphones, tablets or even laptops. Device which embraces this feature will be more compact and smaller thanks to smaller connectors – so we should be expecting smaller laptops, tablets and phones.

Data would be transferred at an incredible speed as the USB Type-C is compatible with up to 10Gbps data transfer rates – that’s about 10 times the Google Fiber connection per second. Theoretically a full movie would be transferred in no time.

Other features of the connector is it is backward compatible – old ports can be used as long as there is an adapter available; it works for all ports available (and would gradually replace them) – DisplayPort, HDMI and the rest.

Google has announced we should expect more Chromebook and Android phones with USB Type-C connector compatible. The company used two Type-C ports on the Chromebook Pixel (2015) compared to just One Apple used on the new 12-inch Macbook. More manufacturers would certainly take more advantage of this new industry standard in the nearest future.

The fuss about the Reversible USB Type-C are justified considering that in years time one would be able to charge a smartphone, tablet and Laptop with just one cable or transfer movies, media and files from PC to smartphone or tablets (and vice versa) with the same cable. Further considering that this cable can be purchased almost in any store and this cable need just one port to work it all.
