MTN and Mozilla Brings Firefox OS to South Africa

MTN and Mozilla has announced the introduction of the Firefox OS to Africa starting with South Africa. The web based Firefox OS from Mozilla is available through MTN in SA on the Alcatel OneTouch Fire E smartphone which would retail for the price equivalent to $133. 

Commenting on the launch of Firefox OS in South Africa; President of Mozilla, Li Gong says;

“We are excited to see MTN launching the first Firefox OS devices in South Africa, enabling millions more people to access the mobile Web at an affordable cost.”

The Alcatel OneTouch Fire E smartphone was announced at the MWC 2014 running Firefox OS version 1.3. Talking briefly about the specs, if features a 4.5-inch (960 X 540 pixels) qHD IPS LCD display, Dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz with 512MB RAM and 4GB built-in storage. 

Others include – a microSD card slot (up to 32GB), rear facing 5-megapixels camera, front facing VGA camera, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS and 1700mAh battery. The OneTouch Fire E device supports four South African languages – Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa and English. 

Firefox OS running smartphones are currently available in around 32 markets on Five continents and asides South Africa, more African countries which we presume includes Nigeria would get Firefox OS smartphones soon.
