There has been different speculation about which company would produce the Apple A9 chipset with Samsung, TSMC, GlobalFoundries all touted as potential makers of the SoC.
According to Bloomberg, Samsung has reportedly gained back it’s status as Apple’s major supplier of chips for the iPhone and the iPad. Even though Samsung made processors for previous iPhone versions, the South Korean company lost its place to TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) which produced majority of the Apple A8 chipset.
Samsung is expected to take majority of the order for the A9 Chipset while the remaining would go to GlobalFoundries which is a samsung partner. This will see no order go the way of TSMC this year.
Samsung will likely produce the Apple A9 chipset using the 14nm FinFET process which it used in making the Exynos 7 Octa 7420 which can be found inside the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. This would make the A9 chispet more faster and powerful than the A8 chipset which was produced using the 20nm process.
Bloomber goes far to confirm that the A9 chipset would be produced in South Korea at the company’s Giheung plant. The Apple A9 Chipset is expected to power the rumored upcoming Apple iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and the long speculated iPhone 6C with 4-inch display which would launch around September this year.
