Light Phone is a simple handset with the size of a credit card which makes and receives phone calls, asides that it doesn’t do much more. The new handset is already on Kickstarter, and with the figures at hand, it looks like it would end up being a reality.
Most people get easily distracted with their smartphones with the daily influx of emails, social media notifications and the likes. Even feature phones come with games, some with music players and there is none as thin as 4mm in thickness. How about a phone that only just make calls and can fit into your wallet?
The Light Phone is called ‘the phone away from phone’ and doesn’t offer much in-terms of specs but it is innovative depending on the aspect you see it from. The Light Phone has a USB slot which makes smartphones connect to it and via an app it forwards calls. It works stand-alone too – i.e independent of carriers with a prepaid SIM packed with it, which gives around 500 minutes of talktime.
Moving to some of the key specs of the Light Phone – it measures 85.6 x 53.98 x 4mm in dimensions, has a volume rocker on the sides, the speaker on the upper front, SIM card slot (Mini SIM), Touch module operation, Dot Matrix LED display, weighs 38.5 grams, powered by a MediaTek MTK6250 processor and a battery which provides around 20 days of standby time. It works on GSM network which is readily available around the world.
Light is the company behind the Light Phone; it was founded by Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang which both met at a Google event in New York. The Light Phone (unlocked) with a micro USB charger, a prepaid SIM (with 500 minutes of talk time) and the app the smartphone connects through costs $100. The devices are expected to start shipping by next year (2016).
