Huawei has announced its next generation of chipset, the Kirin 920 SoC. At the beginning of April, the Senior VP of Huawei announced that the chinese smartphone maker is working on a flagship smartphone with metal body and will differentiate itself from competition. The smartphone in question would be powered by an octa-core smartphone, a metal body and would be pricier and costlier than the normal Huawei phones we see around.

The Quad-core Kirin 920 SoC chipset in question boasts of four Cortex-A15 cores with frequencies between 1.7 and 2.0 GHz, coupled with four Cortex-A7 cores that can run at clock speeds of 1.3-1.6 GHz. On the chipset is the Mali-T628 graphics chip, has support for LTE Category 6, networks, SGLTE / CSFB, as well as VoLTE.

Kirin 920 supports resolutions of 2560 x 1600, so in theory the new chipset should allow the company to create QHD smartphones in the nearer future.

The Huawei Kirin 920 SoC is touted to outperform the current set of chipset in the market Snapdragon 801, Exynos 5420, MediaTek MT6592 and even the upcoming Snapdragon 805.

The first device that looks very likely to be powered by the Huawei Kirin 920 SoC is the Huawei Mulan flagship smartphones; the device is set to feature a 1080p Display, 3GB of RAM, and 13MP rear camera with sensor, 5MP front facing camera with 1080p video. The device also a 16GB inbuilt storage (no word on micro SD) and runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat.

Commercial availability of the Huawel 920 SoC however is yet to be known.
