Android Lollipop market penetration hits 18.1%

Android Lollipop now has a market penetration of 18.1% – this means that both versions of the soon to be dated OS can be found running on about 18.1% of Android devices around the world.

According to the latest Android Distribution report for June and July released by Google; about 18.1% of Android devices are running Android Lollipop with 15.5% running Lollipop 5.0 and the remaining 2.6% for Lollipop 5.1.

Android 4.4 Kitkat still leads the pack with 39.3% (increasing from 39.2%); this means a good number of devices are still stuck and have not made the upgrade to Lollipop. Lollipop itself saw a 5.7% increase from 12.4% in June while Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.x, 4.2.x and 4.3) experienced a sharp decline from 37.4% to 33.6%.

Other versions such as Android 2.2 Froyo (0.3%), Android 2.3.3 – 2.3.7 Gingerbread (4.6%) and Android 4.0.3 – 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich make up the remaining 4.1%. You should know the report covers from June 1 to August 3, 2015.

Google has already announced Android M which will take over from where Lollipop stopped; the new OS version is expected to bring features like Google Now on Tap, Android Pay, App Permissions, Doze and more.

At the moment the final name of the new OS is not known with several deserts starting with M tipped however the names Milkshake, Muffin and Marshmallows seems to have stood out. We should know more before the end of August or likely by September.
