WWDC 2020: Apple unveil iOS 14, iPadOS 14, tvOS 14, watchOS 7

Apple has previewed what to expect from Apple software platforms and products at this year’s online-only 2020 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2020). The Cupertino giant previewed features on the iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, tvOS 14 and more. Here are some of the highlights.

iOS 14

iOS 14 will bring the changes to the Home Screen pages as the company adopts the customized widget plus app drawer approach familiar on Android phones. Thanks to picture-in-picture support, users can now watch videos, ask Siri a question or receive facetime calls while using another app. The digital car keys feature for iPhone and Apple Watch users will allow them to securely unlock and start their cars.

Some of the other highlighted feature include – App clips for discovering and completing specific tasks, changes to conversation in messages including using Memojis and pining top conversations, enhanced app privacy features, third-party and accessories support for Find My, expanded knowledge for Siri, all-new health experiences and privacy report feature for Safari.

iPadOS 14

The relatively new iPadOS 14 will arrive with compact design for FaceTime and phone calls, Siri interactions and Search plus redesigned sidebars across many apps, streamlined toolbars and new pull-down menus. The company also highlighted new features for Apple Pencil including Scribble for iPad and those found on iOS 14 such as new widgets plus app drawer and enhanced app privacy.

tvOS 14

Apple is bringing more home-friendly features to Apple TV with tvOS 14. The next tvOS update will include multi-user capabilities to Apple Arcade and other games, access to HomeKit-enabled video cameras and accessories, and receive doorbell notifications on the screen.

watchOS 7

With watchOS 7, users will be able to use the Watch Face sharing feature to discover and share watch face configuration, and access new health and fitness features such as automatic handwashing detection, sleep tracking and more workout types such as dance. The watch will also get a new hearing health feature that, enhanced app privacy features and new battery notification.

Availability

  • The new software features on iOS 14 will be available later this year as a free upgrade to the following devices: iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max, iPhone XS/XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone 6s/6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st & 2nd gen) and iPod touch (7th gen).
  • iPadOS 14 will be available later this year as a free upgrade for all iPad Pro models, iPad (5th, 6th, 7th gen), iPad mini (5th gen), iPad mini 4, iPad Air (3rd gen) and iPad Air 2.
  • watchOS 7 will be available later this year for Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 4, or Apple Watch Series 5 paired with iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14 or later.
