Apple to Discontinue the Production of iPhone 5C Line in 2015

Going by Taiwan’s Industrial and Commercial Times recent report, Apple is set to discontinue the production of the iPhone 5C by second quarter of 2015 and the suppliers – Foxconn & Wisron have been instructed to wind down production of the device.

The iPhone 5C is the first of so many for Apple; the first iPhone aimed to appeal at wider audience; the first low-cost iPhone; the first to be offered in 8GB storage variants; first to come in different colours options – Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, White, unlike all iPhone models. The iPhone 5C is basically a low-cost alternative plastic version of the popular iPhone 5S but it doesn’t feature the A7 processor nor the Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

The report by Taiwan’s Industrial and Commercial times did not however give any reason behind the plan but Apple is known to discontinue older models when new models are in the market. The report follows up earlier claims by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo which basically states that the production of iPhone 5C and iPhone 4S would cease later in 2015 after promotional plans.

Earlier this year, Apple killed off the iPod line citing ‘lack of mechanical parts’ as the basis for silently phasing out the device. But the fact remains that iPod sales has reduced significantly in recent times and failure to get the required mechanical parts eventually let to its demise.
