Optics Manufacturer, Carl Zeiss has announced the “Carl Zeiss VR One” a $99 alternative to Samsung’s Gear VR. With the consumer Occulus Rift still under development and Google’s Cardboard also available announced to be compatible with different devices. More and more device are looking set to bring VR closer to the end users.
Unlike the Gear VR, the Carl Zeiss VR One said is said to work between 4.7-inch and 5.2-inch smartphones; a special drawer would have to be purchased for each device. The Samsung Galaxy S5 and Apple iPhone 6 have the honour of being compatible with the Carl Zeiss VR One firsthand. Different drawers can be purchased for the headset to hold different sized devices for a meagre sum of $9.90.
The VR One has its own SDK for Android and iOS and two different VR Apps – photo viewer and an ‘AR proof of concept’ would come with the device pre loaded. Whether the headset would be successful would also depend on if developers would be able to come up with different apps for the device.
The Zeiss VR One would be available generally by next year (2015) but select units would be available in December.
