When the new Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch models were announced, the press release mentioned the usage of the Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ for protection on the displays. A little digging shows that a press release has been issued by Corning and more wearable devices from leading global brands, will arrive with it later this year.
Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ is specifically designed for wearable devices and delivers “superior scratch resistance approaching that of alternative luxury cover materials”. It is focused on protecting against visible scratches while maintaining optical clarity, toughness, and touch sensitivity.
The new SR+ glass, based on Project Phire, has “70-percent better damage resistance against impacts and 25-percent better surface reflection” than alternative materials such as Sapphire glass. It is poised as a better alternative to the aforementioned glass which only protects scratches not drops and availability is scarce for now.
Just like it is on smartphones and tablets, Corning wants to put its signature Gorilla Glass to use in the wearable industry. Offering better scratch resistance than regular glass and better crack resistance than Sapphire crystal, the Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ might actually end up being the go to glass for smartwatches and wearables.
