New York-based Corning has unveiled its latest glass protection for mobile consumer electronics – the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus (not the Gorilla Glass 7 as most expected). While the brand either addresses either drop or scratch performance in its Gorilla glasses, the latest Gorilla Glass model is billed to offer better drop and scratch performance when compared to similar products made with aluminosilicate glasses, offered by competing brands.
Under lab conditions, the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus – successor to the Gorilla Glass 6 – will deliver twice the scratch resistance of its predecessor and up to four times better than competitive aluminosilicate glasses. It also survived up to 2 meters (6.6 foot) drop on hard, rough surfaces as opposed to less than 0.8 meters (2.62 foot) offered by aluminosilicate glasses.
Commenting on the launch, John Bayne, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Consumer Electronics at Corning said;
“Corning’s extensive consumer research has shown that improved drop and scratch performance are key components of consumer purchasing decisions. Dropped phones can result in broken phones, but as we developed better glasses, phones survived more drops, but also showed more visible scratches, which can impact the usability of a device,” Bayne said. “Instead of our historic approach of asking our technologists to focus on a single goal – making the glass better for either drop or scratch, we asked them to focus on improving both drop and scratch, and they delivered with Gorilla Glass Victus.”
Corning also confirmed that Samsung will be the first smartphone brand to adopt the Gorilla Glass Victus in the nearest future. It also confirmed that its Gorilla Glasses has been used by 45 major brands in more than 8 billion devices worldwide.
