Samsung is a well known brand name and it has products ranges from cell phones, Televisions, tablets, and others. Talking about Cell Phones, the South Korean company has one of the largest (if not the largest) in different categories ranging from features handset to the flagship Galaxy line.
We’ll be going back to the past with this and the Samsung Guru E1107 comes to mind. This device is the world’s first solar-powered cell phone and was released in 2009. It came with a built-in solar cell into the rear of the device which makes it absorb sunlight which in turn charges the handset’s battery.
Unfortunately for the Guru E1107, the charge had to absorb almost one hour of sunlight just to make 5 – 10 minutes of voice calls. However, it was targeted at market which are riddled with erratic power failure, this made it relevant to developing markets.
Another Solar-powered cellphone was launched by Samsung later that same year – the Samsung Blue Earth which also has a built-in solar panel on the rear. The Blue Earth offered more talktime on voice calls which results to around 10 minutes on one hour of sunlight.
The Samsung Blue Earth also managed to better the Samsung Guru E1107 as it offers features such as Social media, access to Internet via Wi-Fi or 3G, Youtube and GPS. The Blue Earth was made from ecofriendly materials i.e built from recycled materials and came in a recycled box that also doubles as a stand.
