For a while Samsung has been rumoured to be working on its own custom CPU cores for its next gen Exynos chipset which would see the company leave behind the usage of typical ARM cores for its chipset. The next gen flagship Exynos Chipset reportedly would be called Exynos M1.
Information about the new cores surfaced thanks to GNU Binutils, a collection of binary tools that was released to developers this month. The chipset is reportedly being tested by Samsung internally and the company’s partners are also said to have access to the new SoC.
Samsung Exynos M1 would be used on different product line which would range from smartphones, TVs, media players, tablets and consumer electronics. The Samsung Galaxy S7 is said to be the first smartphone to use this new technology.
The chipset could enter mass production around 9 to 12 months from now which somehow confirms it would be used in the Samsung Galaxy S7. The Exynos M1 will feature Heterogenous System Architecture, employing GPU stream processor for general purpose processing and providing massive performance improvements.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Samsung wouldn’t use ARM Cortex-A72 cores for its upcoming chipset, instead it would opt for custom cores codenamed Mongoose; made using the company’s 14nm FinFeTT technology, would employ ARMv8-A 64-bit architecture and the maximum clock speed of the core up to 2.3GHz.
Samsung pulled a surprise this year when it opted for the in-house made Exynos 7 Octa 7420 chipset for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
