Protegeo Oy, the company behind popular mobile fitness app has announced that it has been acquired by social media giant Facebook. The finland based startup made this announcement via a official blog post, and details of the transaction were not revealed.
Moves is a health fitness tracking application which uses smartphone’s sensor to track movement and it doesn’t need any wearable like the Jawbone UP, FuelBand or the Fitbit. The app which has been downloaded over 4 million times tracks users’ cycling, walking and running activities as well as determing users locations throughout that day.
Like Facebook did when it acquired Whatsapp and Instagram, the company would run independently (as a standalone app) and there are no plans to mingle its data with facebook, as well as, only key members of Moves will be joining Facebook at their headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
Moves started out as an iPhone application before introducing the Android version last september (2013) and later introducing over 60 new activity types in February. The Moves deal follows facebook’s high profile $19 billion acquisition of Whatsapp and $2 billion virtual reality startup Occulus VR.
Facebook’s acquisition of Moves comes at a time when Apple is reportedly working on its long rumored smartwatch – iWatch and there are also rumors that Apple is working on releasing an app called Healthbook, which is likely to launch alongside the iOS 8 software later this year.
