Facebook has officially announced the Facebook Lite app, a much more optimised version of the the Facebook for Android app. It is basically an app targeted at helping Facebook users in areas with slow networks (especially developing countries).
Some countries in Africa and Asia – Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe already had access to the app since January. More countries in Asia, followed by countries in Latin America, Europe and America would get the app in coming weeks.
The Facebook Lite app is less than 1MB in size, installs within seconds, runs over any kind of 2G connection even the slowest ones and works on any kind of Android smartphone (new and dated ones). It is quick to load, much more data efficient (doesn’t eat much data), and uses a very low resolution thumbnails when viewing the app.
Even though it is an optimised version of the Facebook for Android app, it still has the main Facebook features – News feed, status, notifications, photos, and others. The notable omisions are the Nearby friends and video. The Facebook Lite app is available for download on Google Play Store.
