Facebook Messenger crosses 700 Million Monthly Active Users

Hot on the heels of joining the over 1 Billion download club on Play Store, Facebook Messenger has now officially passed the 700 million monthly active users mark. During Facebook’s annual investor meeting on Last week Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook Messenger now has a total of 700 million monthly active users.

The company’s standalone messaging app reached the 600 million monthly active users mark in March earlier this year and was at the 500 million monthly user mark around November last year.

Having a total of 700 million monthly users doesn’t really justifies the over 1 billion download the Android app gathered on Google Play store. This still means some people are still not happy with the move and not all those who downloaded the app are making use of it.

However, the split (removing Facebook messenger from the main Facebook app) has been the main reason for the app’s growth, it has gained over 200 monthly users in the past Seven months.

Facebook is adding more and more features to the messaging app, the company has added commerce features like being able to send and receive money from friends and also enabling shopping via the messaging app. And If the latest update to location sharing within messenger should be translated, the app may soon have ride-sharing integration with either Uber or Lyft.

Facebook currently has the two largest messaging apps in the world – Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger. Whatsapp is already ahead of messenger with its 800 million monthly active users reported back in April and their main product, Facebook have over 1 billion monthly active users since 2012.
