Far Out: Apple iPhone 14 Series, Watch Series 8, and More Launched

Apple’s ‘Far Out’ fall event has unveiled the mystery behind the new iPhones – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The event also was the launch of AirPods Pro 2 (AirPods Pro 2nd-Gen) and three Apple Watch models – Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2nd-Gen and Apple Watch Ultra. The iPhone models run iOS 16 while the new Watch models run watchOS 9.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Series

The new iPhone models have been consolidated into two display choice – 6.1-inch (iPhone 14 and 14 Pro) and 6.7-inch (iPhone 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max). All models have features such as Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via Satellite, new 12MP TrueDepth camera with AutoFocus, new Photonic Engine for cameras and super-fast 5G connectivity. That’s pretty much where most of the similarities end. The iPhone 14 (from $799) and iPhone 14 Plus (from $899) are backed by the A15 Bionic processor – the same as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro models, however, Apple reserved the new A16 Bionic for the iPhone 14 (from $999) and iPhone 14 Pro Max (from $1,099).

Photography has also changed for both sides. The non-pro models have a new 12MP main camera to complement the 12MP ultra-wide camera while the Pro models use a new 48MP main camera with quad-pixel sensor paired with 12MP Ultra Wide and 12MP 3x Telephoto cameras. The Pro models also have a new pill and punch-hole style notch which is the home to the new Dynamic Island feature.

AirPods Pro 2 (AirPods Pro 2nd-Gen)

The new AirPods is successor to 2019’s AirPods Pro. It retains Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) but depends on the new Apple H2 chip to deliver twice the noise cancellation of its predecessor and improved sound thanks to the new low-distortion drivers. It now comes with an extra-small ear tip size and new Personalised Spatial Audio feature, which creates a Spatial profile based on the user. The earbuds also has features such as Adaptive transparency mode, new built-in speakers in the charging case, charging via Apple watch charger (along with Qi wireless chargers) and up to 30 hours of combined battery life. They will start shipping Sept. 23 for $249.

New Apple Watch Models

Apple Watch Series 8, Watch SE (2nd-Gen) and Watch Ultra feature crash detection, a new safety feature which alerts emergency contacts and services when it detects the user is in a car crash, and unresponsive after 10 seconds. The Watch Series 8 (GPS – from $399 and Cellular – from $499) adds a Temperature sensor – for majorly tracking female health and low power mode extends battery life up to 36 hours.

The $249 Apple Watch SE (2nd-Gen) is basically a refreshed version of the cheaper watch model while the $799 Apple Watch Ultra is a premium option targeted at extreme and outdoor lovers. The latter has the biggest display of the trio (49mm), 2000nits of brightness and second navigation button. The rest of the key features include International Roaming, new WayFinder watch face for reading outdoors, and 36 hours of battery life (up to 60 hours in Ultra Low Power mode).
