Mozilla has joined the iOS 9 inspired content blocking by announcing – Focus by Firefox which a free content blocking app on safari users on iOS 9. Unsurprisingly, it only works with Apple’s Safari but not Firefox for iOS because content blocking is yet to be available on third-party browsers on iOS.
Focus by Firefox is an app which takes advantage of the content-blocking API introduced in iOS 9. It promises users control over mobile web experience and absolute control over privacy by blocking categories of trackers citing those used for ads, analytics and social media.
It may also increase performance and reduce mobile data usage by blocking Web fonts; and block the same trackers that are blocked by Private Browsing with Tracking Protection in Firefox for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android, based on Disconnect’s open source blocklist.
Focus by Firefox is available for free on the app store and the app doesn’t require extra effort when installing. Mozilla also has plans to bring the feature to Firefox for iOS soon.
“We want to build an Internet that respects users, puts them in control, and creates and maintains trust,” Mozilla’s chief business and legal officer, Denelle Dixon-Thayer, wrote in a blog post. “Too many users have lost trust and lack meaningful controls over their digital lives. This loss of trust has impacted the ecosystem — sometimes negatively. Content blockers offer a way to rebuild that trust by empowering users.”
