Geeksphone has announced its departure from the smartphone scene. Founded in 2009 by Rodrigo Silva-Ramos and Javier Agüera, the company made a total of six smartphones to its name including the multi OS based Geeksphone Revolution.
Citing the stiff and unfavourable conditions in the smartphone industry, the company would no longer make hardwares and it would open-source every code under open source code without much legal fuss. The company’s engineering talents would now work with Silent Circle.
Geeksphone co-created the Blackphone in collaboration with security software experts, Silent Circle, with the spanish based company handling the hardware aspect. Earlier this year, both companies announced Geeksphone has been bought out of the joint venture by its partner, Silent Circle.
Over the course of its six years existence, Geeksphone managed to score many firsts – The first spanish company to create a smart; the first European company to launch an Android based phone and the first global brand to launch a Firefox OS mobile device – in conjunction with Spanish carrier Telefónica and the Mozilla Foundation.
Both Geekphone founders has announced a new brand – geeks!me which would focus on wearables. The new company expected to announce a new wearable which would be able to track sexual activities in upcoming months.
