I/O 2019: Google Unveil Nest Hub Max with Emphasis on Privacy

Alongside the new Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones, Google’s Nest brand unveiled a new smart home product – the Nest Hub Max at the Google I/O 2019 developer conference. The company’s new smart display has all the features and functions of the Nest Hub (formerly Google Home Hub) and can make video calls like the Amazon Echo Show, Facebook Portal and Lenovo Smart Display.

Priced starting at US$ 229, the Nest Hub Max is Google’s first smart display with a built-in camera (including features like Nest Cam) for video calls via Google Duo and security surveillance. It has a premium stereo speaker and 10-inch HD touchscreen display for showcasing digital photos and streaming videos as well as live shows on Youtube TV. To ensure privacy, the company equipped the product with a physical switch to turn off the microphone and camera and a small green LED light glows up when the camera is turned on.

The Google Assistant-powered smart display controls compatible products and uses the on-device gesture recognition technology to support quick gestures. It supports multiple users and the Face Match feature creates different facial model for each user or member of the family. It will go on sale later this summer in Australia ($349), the UK (£219) and the US ($229). Google also update the prices of its existing speakers in the US: Nest Hub (Google Home Hub) – $129; Google Home – $99 and Google Home Max – $299.
