Made By Google 2018: Google Unveils Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL Smartphones, Pixel Slate and Google Home Hub

At its annual ‘Made By Google’ event, Google has taken the wraps off four new hardware products – the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL flagship smartphones, Google Pixel Slate and Google Home Hub. All four are available for pre-order from the Google store.

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

The Pixel 3 sports a 5.5-inch FHD+ 18:9 display while the Pixel 3 XL has a notched 6.3-inch 19:9 display with QHD+ resolution. Both run Android 9.0 Pie and have the same single 12.2MP rear camera with LED Flash, OIS, Dual Pixel AF and new AI Powered features such as Night Sight, Top Shot, Super Res Zoom and PhotoBooth mode.

The front camera setup includes dual 8MP sensors one with 75-degree field of view and another with 76-degree field of view. Both are powered by the Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB built-in storage.

Both models feature the signature two-tone design on an aluminium body frame with hybrid coating and Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front and rear. They have IP68-rating (water and dust resistance), dual stereo front firing speakers, Titan M security chip and USB Type-C port.

‎Power is supplied by a 2,915mAh and 3,450mAh battery respectively, with support for fast and wireless charging. ‎The Google Pixel 3 starts at $799 and $899 for the 64GB and 128GB versions; while the ‎Google Pixel 3 XL start at $899 and $999 for the 64GB and 128GB versions.

Clearly White, Just Black and Not Pink are the available colour options. Google is also offering the Pixel USB-C Earbuds in the box and a separate Pixel Stand wireless charging dock that also double as a photo booth for $79. The stand charges the phone in landscape and portrait mode and charges any Qi-compatible smartphones.

Google Pixel Slate

Google’s new Pixel Slate combines the productivity and power of a desktop to a tablet. The high-end detachable Chrome OS slate, which is expected to rival the Surface Pro and iPad Pro devices, will go on sale later this year starting at $599 but will run up to $1,599.

The tablet has a 12.3-inch (3000 x 2000 pixels) Molecular display with 2.5D curved glass and support for Pixelbook Pen, dual front speakers, 8MP (f/1.8 and f/1.9) rear and front cameras, built-in Titan Security chip and the fingerprint sensor is embedded into the power button.

The Google Pixel Slate is powered by any of the following Intel processors (Celeron; 8th gen Core m3, Core i5 and Core i7) paired with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. The Pixel Slate Bluetooth keyboard (sold separately for $199) has rounded keys and backlighting.

Google Home Hub

Building on the success of the Home, Home mini & Home Max speakers, Google has announced the Home Hub, a smart assistant display with Google Assistant built-in. It is priced starting at $149 and expected to rival the Amazon Echo Show and Facebook Portal.

The Home Hub packs a 7-inch display, full range speaker and arrives in Aqua, Charcoal, Chalk and Sand colour options. It performs all the functions associated with assistant such as ‎controlling smart home devices, setting up Routines and alarms, playing music from YouTube and others streaming websites, and lots more.

With ‘Live Album’ feature on Google Photos, it doubles as a photo frame for displaying the best of images. ‎There is no camera on-board and the Ambient EQ light sensor at the top automatically adjusts the display to blend with the room.
