Highlights of the Google Project Fi Wireless Service

Google finally took the wraps of its long rumoured wireless service in the US this week. The service simply known as ‘Project Fi’ will pitch the search giant against the likes of Verizon and AT&T as it already has Sprint and T-Mobile on its side.

Google (acting as an MVNO here)  makes use of Sprint and T-Mobile networks whilst also relying on millions of pre-vetted WiFi networks. Fi currently has just one single plan which requires a monthly basic payment of $20 and $10 per gigabyte of data used. The plan refunds unused data paid upfront for and offers Wi-Fi Tethering, unlimited free internation texting, unlimited domestic calls & text, low-cost international calls, data coverage in about 120 countries.

Asides having the ability to switch to the strongest network between Sprint and T-Mobile; it also switches back and forth to WiFi connectivity if  the cellular networks are unavailable when calling or texting. Connections on pre-approved open networks are encrypted for user to avoid being eavesdroped on.

It is easily acknowledged that the Project Fi is an extended version of Google Hangouts. Calls can be placed from user’s number to any hangouts enabled laptop, PC or tablet around in addition to the phone. Google Project Fi is currently available in the US for Nexus 6 smartphone owners and as of yet is only available via an invite system.
