Huawei P50, P50 Pro Debut with No 5G, HarmonyOS

Huawei recently launched its new flagship P series smartphones – the P50 and P50 Pro. Both smartphone models do not support 5G connectivity because the sanctions placed on the Chinese company by the US government limits its ability to buy 5G modems and other components. They also come pre-loaded with the company’s HarmonyOS instead of the more mainstream Android OS and feature the same dual-matrix camera design, 80x – 200x zoom range, AIS Pro True-Steady Shot and True-Chroma shot.

Huawei P50 Pro

The P50 Pro is built around a 6.6-inch FHD+ OLED 3D curved display with 120Hz refresh rate and 300Hz touch sampling rate. It is fitted with Leica-branded quad camera setup with 50MP (f/1.8, OIS) main, 40MP (f/1.6) monochrome, 13MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide-angle and 64MP (f/3.5, OIS, 3.5x optical zoom) Telephoto cameras. The front punch-hole notch holds the 13MP (f/2.4) selfie camera.

The device has an in-display fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C port (charging and earjack), NFC, Wi-FI 6, Stereo speakers with Huawei Histen, and Bluetooth 5.2. It is also IP68-certified (water and dust resistance) and depends on a 4,360mAh battery with 66W Super Fast Charge and 50W Wireless Huawei SuperCharge. The Pro is available in two processor variants – Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform (4G only) and Kirin 9000 (4G only).

Pricing starts at CNY 5,988 for the base Huawei P50 Pro (8GB + 128GB + SD888); CNY 6,488 for the next model (8GB + 256GB + SD888/Kirin 9000) and CNY 7,488 for the top model (8GB + 512GB + SD888/Kirin 9000). There is a special 12GB + 512GB with either processor that would sell for between CNY 7,988 and CNY 8,488. The Kirin 9000 versions are available on sale in China while the Snapdragon version will arrive much later this year (December). Available colours are Black, Gold, Pink and White.

Huawei P50

The P50 is only powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform and features a flat 6.5-inch + OLED display with 90Hz refresh rate and 300Hz touch sampling rate. It has the same main and ultra-wide-angle camera as the Pro model but adds a single 12MP (f/3.4, OIS) telescope camera to the tri-camera setup. Power is supplied by a 4,100mAh battery with 66W Huawei SuperCharge. Pricing starts at CNY 4,488 for the 8GB + 128GB model and CNY 4,988 for the 8GB + 256GB model. It will go on sale in September in Black, Gold and White colours.
