Facebook has launched a new app, a standalone version of the well-known Messenger for Android. The Facebook Messenger Lite is a slimmed down version of the original Messenger app but offers all the core features and experiences such as allowing people send text, photos, stickers and links quickly and easily to those using Messenger and Messenger Lite.
With more than 1 billion monthly active users, the Facebook Messenger Lite furthers the company’s goal of empowering more people all over the world to stay connected. The new app is targeted at markets with a prevalence of basic smartphones (Android) and slower than average Internet speeds.
The app works very well (fast to install and quick to start up) regardless of the speed of the network and the common storage limitations associated with entry-level devices. It also uses the same logo as the original Messenger but the colours are reversed – White chat bubble background and Blue Bolt logo.
At just under 10MB in size, Facebook Messenger Lite is starting to roll out to users in emerging markets such as Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Venezuela. More countries are expected to get the app in coming months.
