There is a new family social robot in town and it is the first. Jibo as it is known is hyped as the World’s First Social Robot for the Home’ and has social robotics pioneer, Dr. Cynthia Breazeal as one of those at the helm of affairs.
Jibo is a social or companion robot which is described as being friendly, helpful and intelligent. It has the skills of being an assistant, messenger, photographer, avatar, storyteller and of course, as a companion. The key features are to: see, hear, speak, learn, help and relate.
Measuring about 279.4mm tall and weighing about 2.72kg in size; Jibo has its body made from a combo of aluminium, glass and ABS plastic materials. It is powered by a high-end ARM-based mobile processor, has a HD LCD touchscreen display , two hi-res cameras and runs embedded Linux-based OS.
The social robot could be said to work like a smartphone and connects to mobile devices via Wi-Fi. It is available in Home and Developer Editions; the former costs $749 while the latter costs $799 with Jibo SDK. Being a crowdfunded project, it will be delivered to the backers starting from March/April 2016.
