Kenyan-made Taifa Laptops announced, costs KSH 46,720

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the Kenyan Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development (MOIED) have announced the first ever Kenyan-made laptops in the country. The laptops are simply known by the moniker – the Taifa Laptops.

The Taifa Laptops would retail for Sh46,720 (around N96,000 in Naira or $480) and would be available at Stores in Nairobi. So far only 4000 units of the laptop have been assembled and are available for purchase. More units of the laptop are expected to be assembled in due course. 

Taifa Laptop Key Specifications

Talking about the specs, the Taifa Laptop sports a 14-inch (1366 x 768 pixels) WXGA TFT display, powered by an Intel Core i3 4th Generation processor, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, HDMI port and 500GB space of Hard Disk Drive. 

The rest of the specs includes – 1 x USB 2.0, a microSD card slot reader , 2 x USB 3.0, HD Video Webcam and high quality speakers. The laptop runs Windows 8.1 and comes with the Microsoft Office 2013 (Genuine models). It is backed by a 6-cell (60Whr) Lithium Ion battery (4200mAh).

About the Nairobi Industrial and Technological Park

The Taifa Laptop brand is owned by the by the Nairobi Industrial and Technological Park (NITP) and the laptops were assembled in partnership with Inspur, an international firm based in China. A multi-purpose assembly line is currently being installed at the Nairobi Institute and Technological Park which would be launched by September 2015 and assembling devices would commence immediately there. 

NITP is a company owned by the JKUAT and MOIED which is a very ambitious flagship Kenya Vision 2030 project. The aim of the project is to provide more worldclass solution, create jobs and wealth and also ensuring more Kenyan promote the ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ slogan. 

This is not the first time the JKUAT and the MOIED have partnered. Both institutions as well as other private and public partners began assembling Desktop computers in 2006 under the E-MADO Brand.
