Launch Recap: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5

Samsung Electronics announced the global release of its new foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 at its Unpacked 2023 event in Seoul, Korea. Both 5G-enabled smartphones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy; and come pre-loaded with One UI 5.1.1 (based on Android 13).

Either model is fitted with a combination of Armor Aluminum frames, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the Flex Window and back cover; shock dispersion layer on the main screen, and IPX8 rating to maintain durability across board. Sales is expected to commence from August 11 in the following markets: China, Europe, Korea, and North America.

 

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the fifth generation of Samsung’s premium Flip smartphones. There are a handful of notable changes from the Galaxy Z Flip 4 such as the new Flex Window (3.78 times bigger than the previous-gen), new Flipsuit case and Flex Hinge. With the Flex Window, the user can interact with widgets (similar to iOS), access quick settings, and quick replies with full QWERTY keyboard.

The device has a 6.7-inch FHD+ (22:9) display with 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 3.4-inch diagonal display with 60Hz refresh rate. It packs 8GB of RAM, 256GB/512GB storage option, 12MP (f/2.2, 1.12μm, 123˚ FOV) ultra wide + 12MP (f/1.8, 1.8μm, Dual Pixel AF, OIS, 83˚ FOV) wide-angle rear cameras, and 10MP (f/2.2, 1.22μm, 85˚ FOV) selfie camera.

The rest of the specs include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Fingerprint sensor (side), and 3,700mAh battery with fast wired and wireless charging. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be available in the following colours: Cream, Graphite, Lavender, and Mint. There will also be some online-exclusive colours as well as accessories such as Clear Gadget Case and Flipsuit Case.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the fifth generation of Samsung’s premium foldable smartphones. As expected, there were only incremental changes from its predecessor – the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Samsung has added an improved taskbar to allow users switch easily between four recent apps; two-handed drag and drop, and a resized S Pen Fold Edition.

The device maintains its 7.6-inch QXGA+ (21.8:18) main display with 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a 6.2-inch cover screen with 48 – 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It has the selfie camera on the Z Flip 5 as the cover camera; 4MP (f/1.8, 2.0μm, 80˚  FOV) under display camera and a rear triple camera system with 12MP (f/2.2, 1.12μm, 123˚  FOV) ultra wide, 50MP (Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1.8, 1.0μm, 85˚  FOV) wide-angle and 10MP (PDAF, OIS, f/2.4, 1.0μm, 36˚  FOV, 3x optical zoom) telephoto units.

The rest of the specs include 12GB RAM, 256GB/512GB/1TG internal storage, Fingerprint sensor (side), and 4,400mAh battery with wired and wireless fast charging. The Z Fold 5 will be available in the following colours: Cream, Icy Blue and Phantom Black. Users can also buy accessories such as the Slim S Pen Case.
