Lenovo and Google announce consumer-ready Project Tango Smartphone

‎At the CES 2016, Lenovo and Google have announced a consumer-ready Project Tango Smartphone which will be available during the summer. The finished device wasn’t showcased at the event, but it is expected to have a phablet screen size and will sell for a price less than USD 500.

Launched around two years, Google’s Project Tango uses a combination of cameras and sensors on mobile devices to replicate 3D tracking with depth sensing. ‎The upcoming smartphone is not the first to be based on the technology as there are developer kits (smartphone and tablets) available but this is the first consumer focused model.

Based on the available information, the upcoming Project Tango smartphone has a screen size under 6.5-inches putting it in the phablet category and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor rather than the specialised ones used in developer versions. ‎Talking about the camera which has been ‎redesigned for use in portrait mode rather than landscape; it include – a fisheye lens, RGB camera and a depth camera. ‎

To address the anticipated worries associated with shortage of apps forehand, both companies are encouraging developers to submit gaming and utility app ideas using Project Tango via the App Incubator program. The best ideas will be given adequate support (funding and engineering) and could end up being pre-loaded on the device.
