Lenovo has announced a new sub-brand in China called ZUK, this new company would operate independently as a brand and also focus more on winning more of the domestic market.
While ZUK would be a software focused smartphone division, the company would launch a new flagship smartphone in September – ZUK Z1 which would also runs on an in-house made software UI called the ZUI.
Unlike the company’s smartphone division which focuses mostly on hardware, ZUK would focus on software and out of the 400 employees of the company – about 350 would be focused on working on the software. The company also intends to ZUI Custom ROM for its devices and build more features based on feedback from users.
You can expect a new flagship smartphone every year and the company does not rule out more than one device in a year to match up with other competitors in the market. However, over time the focus would be more on software and less on hardware. Lenovo is hoping ZUK will distinguish itself from competitors in terms of new and innovative features.
If you are wondering what the difference between the Lenovo and ZUK brands are; the former is a complex company where decisions have to go through a long line of chain of command to be implemented while ZUK would be pretty straightforward in its implementation of decision.
ZUK would not release smartphones for other regions except China and neighbouring countries (at least for now) and there is no word on the official specifications to expect from the smartphone.
