Lenovo has completed the acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google. In a deal which reportedly worths US$2.91 Billion see the Chinese company finally take over the company from Google. The move will see Motorola maintain its Chicago headquarters but is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lenovo.
The move positions Lenovo as the third largest smartphone maker in the world and would also see the company inherit the Motorola Brand and Motorola’s portfolio of innovative smartphones like Moto X, Moto G, Moto E and the DROIDTM series, as well as the future Motorola product roadmap.
Motorola was purchased in 2012 by Google for US$12.5 Billion, while stating it is mainly interested in the company’s patent portfolio. Google still own majority of Motorola’s Patent but the company would be given a license to its rich patent portfolio and other intellectual property.
Motorola will retain over 2,000 patent assets and a large number of patent cross-license agreements, as well as the Motorola Mobility brand and trademark portfolio.
