LG Electronics has announced its first smartphone off its Explorer Project – the LG Wing at an online launch event. It will be available initially in South Korea from October and followed by key markets in North America and Europe. While pricing is currently unknown, the smartphone assumes a unique form factor which lets the device’s two displays be used in two modes: Basic and Swivel.
Users can switch to and from both modes seamlessly, and the choice of chipset – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X52 5G Modem-RF System – provides +5G connectivity. The Wing’s front screen rotates clockwise 90 degrees to reveal the second screen in Swivel mode. Two applications can be shown on each screen simultaneously or one can be shown on both screens. LG has also partnered with streaming platforms such as YouTube and Rave to enjoy video on the full screen and comments as well as interaction on the other screen.
The LG Wing has a main 6.8-inch p-OLED display with 20.5:9 aspect ratio while the second screen acts as a grip (Grip Lock mode) for the main screen in landscape mode and Media Controller for changing video and sound settings. Photography is handled by a triple camera setup with 64MP (f/1.8, 78°, 0.8µm, OIS) ultra-high, 13MP (f/1.9, 117°, 1.0µm) ultra-wide and 12MP (f/2.2, 120°, 1.4µm) ultra-wide big pixel cameras. To preserve the unique front, the phone has a 32MP (f/1.9) Pop UP selfie camera.
The phone has a Gimbal Motion Camera which turns the second screen into a convenient grip. The second screen can also be used as an editing palette while the photo or video is on the main screen. LG has also included a Creator Kit for advanced features such as Timelapse Control, Voice Bokeh and ASMR Recording. The Dual Recording feature in Swivel Mode uses the front pop-up camera and one of the rear cameras simultaneously.
