Li-Fi technology uses Visible Light communication and is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi

A couple of days ago, Li-Fi technology was employed in real life situation in Estonia; the new form of wireless technology transmits data using Visible Light Communication (VLC) and research lab test has shown it can achieve data transmission at 1GB per second which is about 100 times faster than the average current Wi-Fi speeds.

For the first time in history, Scientists tested Li-Fi technology in offices and industrial environments in Tallinn, Estonia. The technology itself created by Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 2011 when he demonstrated that light from a single LED Bulb can transmit data more than a single cellular tower.

It uses Visible Light Communication (VLC) i.e visible light between 400 and 800 Terahertz (THz) which cannot be detected by the naked eye and transmits messages through binary code. Asides being faster, since light cannot penetrate through walls it is confirmed to be much more safer since there would be little interference.

Li-Fi is no doubt considerably faster and said to be more secure than the current systems, it is unlikely going to replace Wi-Fi anytime soon. Both systems could however be combined to create more efficient, safer and faster networks. Researchers are already looking at the prospect of retrofitting the available devices right now to work with Li-Fi technology.
