Mediatek introduced the Helio P22 SoC, the first budget processor from the series based on the 12nm TSMC FinFET technology. The latest entrant joins the recently launched Helio P60 SoC to bring a number of in-demand, high-end features to mid-tier devices.
Built using the new TSMC 12nm FinFET process, the Mediatek Helio P22 packs a powerful octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU operating up to 2.0GHz and a 650MHz IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The SoC supports displays with resolutions up to 1600 x 720 pixels (HD+) and up to 20:9 aspect ratio, up to 6GB of RAM and 21MP single or 13MP + 8MP dual camera setup with 30 frames per second (FPS).
While it doesn’t support the AI Silicon like the Helio P60 SoC, the Helio P22 SoC promises AI-powered camera enhancements such as Face ID (Face Unlock), Single-Cam/Dual-Cam Bokeh and smart photo album. The SoC also has includes: 4G Dual SIM support with VoLTE/ViLTE, 802.11ac WiFi , multi-GNSS options (GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo) and Bluetooth 5.0.
The Mediatek Helio P22 has already gone into mass production and should arrive in devices launching this quarter (Q2 2018). It powers the mid-range Vivo Y83 which appears to be a budget version of the Vivo X21i (Helio P60 SoC).
