Following the widespread news that Samsung might be opting for Mediatek SoCs on its mid-range to low-end smartphones, the company has announced its new flagship processor – the Mediatek Helio X30 as well as an improved version of the Helio P20 – the Mediatek Helio P25.
Mediatek Helio X30
Expected to enter mass production in the first half of 2017, the MediaTek Helio X30 flagship processor is based on TSMC’s 10nm process and arrives with 10 cores. Two of the cores (2 x Cortex-A73 @ 2.8GHz) handles the intensive chores; four other cores (4 x Cortex-A53 @2.2GHz) provides backup and the last four cores (4 x Cortex A35 @2.0GHz) handles the little tasks.
The Helio X30 promises up to 53% improvement in power saving and about 43% increase in performance compared to the Helio X20. It supports up to 8GB LPPDR4 RAM and now paired with quad-core PowerVR graphics unit.
The PowerVR 7XT series GPU used offers 2.4 times better performance, 58% increase in power saving and will be more suitable to handle the demands of virtual reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), compared to the ARM Mali-T880 MP4 used on the Helio X20.
Mediatek Helio P25
The Mediatek Helio P25 on its part is basically a higher clocked version of the octa-core Helio P20 SoC. It is based on the 16nm TSMC process and promises 25% low power consumption than the Mediatek Helio P10. At the moment, there isn’t too much info on the detailed specs of the Helio P25.
