Late last month, Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company, Mediatek Inc. introduced its Dual 4G VoLTE solution in alliance with China mobile. This technology allows devices connect at the same time to two 4G networks using two different SIM cards for VoLTE (Voice over LTE).
VoLTE is voice calls over a 4G LTE network rather than 2G GSM or 3G UMTS networks which is normally used and requires compatible devices. Currently, most dual SIM smartphones in the market only allow the primary SIM to support LTE while the other SIM slot has to connect over 2G or 3G networks.
The flagship Mediatek Helio X30 processor, introduced earlier this year, will be the first chipset to support this Dual 4G VoLTE connectivity on China Mobile network. The chipset is equipped with LTE Cat.10 modem (up to 450Mbps downlink via 3x carrier aggregation). Along with VoLTE, the it also supports ViLTE, Wi-Fi calling, LTE in unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) and RCS.
Asides the Helio X30, Mediatek also confirmed that the Dual 4G VoLTE solution will be integrated within future smartphone platforms from the company. In related news, the Taiwanese company also debuted its first narrow band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) SoC, the MT2625 and is partnering with China Mobile to build the industry’s smallest NB-IoT module (16mm X 18mm) around the chipset.
