Meet the Mi VR Play – Xiaomi’s First Ever VR Headset

Xiaomi has ventured into the Virtual Reality (VR) world. The Chinese company has announced the Xiaomi Mi VR Play – an entry-level virtual reality headset similar to Google’s cardboard but this time around, the body is made from more sturdier materials and isn’t available to the general public yet.

Measuring 201 x 107 x 91mm in dimensions and weighing in at 208.7 grams, ‎the Xiaomi Mi VR Play has a body made up of the combination of Lycra and EVA and will arrive in varying colours options and customisable design. It ‎works like the Gear VR by Samsung i.e. it requires a smartphone and is compatible with those with the ranges of 4.7-inch to 5.7-inch.

The Zipper design feature instead of Velcro ensures the device stays in place and doesn’t fall off when moving the headset. On the inside, it sports a pair of anti glare aspherical lenses, with a tolerance of 0.01mm and high image clarity.

Xiaomi has also included the Mi VR app with support for 3D movies, videos, apps and games. After calling for beta tests registrations, the company received millions for the Xiaomi Mi VR Play in China. A fraction of those selected will be able to cop the headset for a meagre CNY 1 (US$ 0.15).

There are plans to make the headset available globally in the future but no word yet on the final market price.

PS: Rumours says the Xiaomi Mi VR Play will sell for a suggested retail price – CNY 49 (US$ 7).
