Microsoft Unveil Xbox Series X Specs, Offers 12TFLOPS GPU

Microsoft has revealed more specifications about its next generation gaming console – the Xbox Series X. According to the company, the next-gen Xbox, previously known as ‘Project Scorpio, is expected to quench the fan’s thirst for more cutting-edge processing speed and graphical power and will arrive sometime in 2020.

The Xbox Series X will be equipped with a custom designed processor that uses AMD’s latest Zen 2 and Radeon’s RDNA 2 architectures to deliver four times the processing power of the original Xbox One, and allows developer to explore up to 12 TFLOPS of GPU performance – twice what the Xbox One X and over eight times what the original Xbox One offers.

The console will arrive with Microsoft’s patented variable rate shading (VRS) and hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing as well as NVMe SSD storage to boost loading time and support for both 8K gaming and up to 120 frames per second (fps) in games. The quick resume feature will allow users instantly continue multiple games from a suspended state.

In partnership with the HDMI forum and TV manufacturers, Microsoft also ensured the console will tap into HDMI 2.1 features such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for connecting to display at the lowest latency mode and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for ensuring minimal lag between the display’s refresh rate and game’s frame rate.

The Xbox Series X will be backward compatible with four generations of Xbox consoles – this ranges from games to gaming accessories and subscription (Xbox Game Pass). With ‘Smart Delivery’, any Xbox user only need to purchase a gaming title once and not worry about compatibility with other generations of Xbox console. This will be available on exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles such as the Halo Infinite.

Microsoft is expected to share more details about the Xbox Series X in coming months. The company is expected to unveil the console in time for holidays 2020, when Sony’s PS5 is also expected to be unveiled.
